The Atlantic Road from Kårvåg to Bud is 36 kilometres long. With a motorhome, I would make room for two stops before deciding whether to continue towards Molde and Åndalsnes.
Choose a short visit or a longer circuit
The official scenic route and map cover 36 km from Kårvåg to Bud; the famous bridges are only part of the visit. I would allow a relaxed half day to drive the route, walk at Eldhusøya and stop in Bud.
With just 2–3 hours, I would choose Eldhusøya and a short walk in Bud, allowing for driving and the journey there separately. Kristiansund, Molde and Romsdal deserve their own days; add Trollstigen or Geiranger when the roads are open and time permits.
Two stops. Space between them. That leaves more time beside the sea than a schedule with a booked ferry waiting after the next bridge.
Approach from the fjords or from central Sweden
A southern approach through Bergen, Sognefjord and Geiranger suits a longer west-coast journey with time for each fjord and ferry.
From Sweden, an eastern option follows E14 from Sundsvall and Storlien towards Trondheim, then continues towards Kristiansund. Check current roads and ferries before assigning daily stages; the distance to Kårvåg depends on your starting point.
Stop beside Storseisund Bridge, not on it
The curved 260-metre bridge appears to end in the air from the classic angle. In calm weather, the actual crossing takes seconds.
Strong westerly winds and gusts can affect a tall motorhome. Norway does not provide one universal motorhome wind limit for this bridge; check Vegvesen traffic information and warnings that day, slow down and do not drive when the road is closed or conditions exceed your vehicle and experience.
Stop at Eldhusøya beside the bridge to walk and take photographs without blocking traffic. The walkway and toilets remain open year-round; the café follows seasonal hours listed on the official page.
This is not a dump station: emptying motorhome and caravan toilets there is prohibited. Plan separate servicing, for example in Kårvåg, Vevang or Bud, and check access to your chosen station before the tanks fill.
Continue through Kristiansund, Molde and Åndalsnes
Drive from Kristiansund to Averøy, cross the scenic road towards Bud and continue along the Romsdal coast to Molde. Current toll and tunnel arrangements should be checked before travel.
From Molde, the ferry towards Vestnes leads into Romsdal and Åndalsnes, where the landscape shifts from coast to steep mountains. Use a signed campsite, motorhome area or car park where overnight use is allowed; an attractive riverside gravel area is not automatically legal.

Build ferries into the day
Halsa–Kanestraum on E39 and Molde–Vestnes may form part of your route. Check the operator's current timetable, vehicle category and payment terms before planning the day. Queuing, loading and leaving the vessel also take time.
Two ferries can fill a travel day even when the map shows a short distance. Leave room before the next booked activity and keep a later option where possible.
Choose an overnight place and services ahead
Use campsites, motorhome areas and car parks where overnight use is permitted. Check the price, services and availability for your vehicle; a rest area with toilets may not provide water or waste disposal.
With a rooftop tent, the unfolded tent also needs to fit the site's conditions. Read the signs and choose another place if its use is unclear. An attractive coastal gravel area is not enough to build an overnight plan around.
Prepare for wind, rain and seasonal roads
Waterproof clothing, footwear with grip and a way to keep wet items separate make coastal stops easier. Follow manufacturer limits for awnings and rooftop tents as the wind rises.
Check Vegvesen's current traffic information before driving and before any mountain roads such as Trollstigen. Let closures or strong winds change the day's plan.
Keep the stops that made the coastal day
After Eldhusøya and Bud, one afternoon may be scattered across many phone photographs. In FARON, add pictures and notes to those two stops and see them on your trip map, giving the next coastal trip a starting point in places you want to revisit.
For a longer journey, compare routes in the Norway guide or continue north with the Lofoten motorhome guide.

FAQ
Can a large motorhome drive the Atlantic Road?
Yes, the road carries ordinary heavy traffic, but it is exposed and sometimes narrow. Check current traffic and wind warnings before crossing.
How much time should I allow for the west-coast circuit?
I would allow a half day for the Atlantic Road itself with stops. Kristiansund, Molde and Romsdal can together fill roughly a week when you want separate days for walks and excursions.
What is worth seeing beyond the bridge?
Eldhusøya, Bud, the Romsdal coast and Åndalsnes provide the context that makes the short bridge section worthwhile.
How do I save the places privately?
Log each night in FARON with its coordinate, photograph and note; it remains private unless you choose otherwise.
