It is 20:40 in Smögen when a Volvo XC60 with a rooftop tent enters a motorhome stopover. The driver switches off the engine but leaves the tent closed until the conditions at the entrance have been read.
Some Swedish ställplatser — designated motorhome stopovers — accept rooftop tents. Others do not. The operator's vehicle rules, the available pitch and the tent's opened footprint decide whether the night works.
Check the permitted vehicle type before booking
The word ställplats does not tell you which guests are accepted. One site may be licensed only for motorhomes, another may include caravans and a third may expressly welcome ordinary cars with rooftop tents. Permits, fire safety, payment systems and the layout can all affect that choice.
Park & Stay is a clear example: its current customer information says that tents, rooftop tents and sleeping in an ordinary car are not permitted on its sites. Vassbacken beside the Göta Canal takes a different approach. Its official site information welcomes motorhomes, caravans, cars with rooftop tents and ordinary tents.
Grännaberget also accepts several accommodation types. These examples use the same Swedish label while applying different rules, so look for an explicit mention of cars and rooftop tents. If it is missing, contact the operator instead of treating an app category or an old visitor comment as permission.
Measure the complete overnight footprint
A parked car occupies one rectangle. An opened rooftop tent may occupy another. Some tents rise within the vehicle's width; others fold sideways beyond it. The ladder, doors and awning count too.
Measure the setup as it is used at night. A side-folding tent can place the ladder in the next bay even when all four wheels are correctly inside the markings. Leave room to open doors and keep any required fire or safety distance from neighbouring vehicles.
A campsite pitch may be designed for a car, tent and equipment within a stated area. A compact motorhome stop often assumes that one vehicle remains inside one marked bay. A vertical pop-up tent may fit more easily, but that does not make it automatically permitted.

Study photographs, pitch dimensions and markings before arrival. Ask whether the platform and ladder must remain inside your own pitch. When no useful dimensions are available, keep a second site close enough to reach after dark.
Separate a stopover, campsite and ordinary car park
A motorhome stopover normally offers an arranged place for overnight vehicles with less service than a campsite. A campsite usually has clearer pitch types for tents, caravans and motorhomes, and sometimes a specific option for rooftop tents.
An ordinary car park is different. Permission to park does not automatically permit an opened tent, ladder, chairs and cooking equipment. Signs, local rules and the landowner's conditions still apply.
The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency also explains that a vehicle with a rooftop tent is not covered by the Right of Public Access when it is driven or parked. Beaches, meadows, parks and lawns can count as off-road terrain. Read the vehicle-based wild-camping rules before replacing a closed stopover with an inviting patch of grass.
Confirm booking, payment and late arrival
A rooftop-tent-friendly site can still fail if arrival does not work. Check whether it is bookable or drop-in, how payment is made, when reception closes and whether a barrier code is sent by text message. Confirm current information with the operator; systems and seasonal access change.
Service differs just as much. One stopover may provide toilets, showers, drinking water and waste disposal. Another is simply a legal bay for the night. Decide what you actually need before choosing the cheaper or closer pin.
Keep one realistic alternative. Write down its last arrival time, permitted vehicle type and route from the first site. Short. Nearby. Still open. That is a useful backup at 22:15.
Save the condition that decided the night
After the stay, record why it worked: rooftop tents explicitly accepted, side-folding setup fitted inside the grass pitch, code arrived promptly and road noise began at 06:00. If it failed, save that too.
FARON is not a booking service or legal checker. It gives you a private place to keep the night, photograph and practical note together. Log the stay on the trip map and the decisive detail will still be there when the same vehicle returns next season.
Frequently asked questions
Are rooftop tents allowed at Swedish motorhome stopovers?
Only at sites whose rules permit them. Check the operator's current vehicle and accommodation conditions before arrival.
Must the opened tent fit inside the marked pitch?
Usually the entire setup must respect the allocated area and required safety distances. Ask the operator when the pitch dimensions or ladder rules are unclear.
Is a campsite safer to book with a rooftop tent?
It is often easier because campsites tend to define tent and vehicle pitches clearly, but you must still select a pitch that accepts a car with a rooftop tent.
What should I check before a late arrival?
Confirm the vehicle type, booking or drop-in process, payment, barrier access, pitch size, available service and one nearby alternative.
