Rain does not have to decide the whole weekend. For an imagined two-night trip to Lake Siljan, I would spend more time choosing the pitch and rehearsing setup than packing another spare blanket.
Choose the ground before unloading
Walk around the pitch while bedding is still in the car. The Swedish Tourist Association recommends level, dry ground and avoiding hollows when rain is expected. A soft dip that looks comfortable can collect water.
At a campsite, I would ask staff for another pitch if the allocated one was already waterlogged. Do not dig drainage trenches to make an unsuitable pitch work. Make sure there is room for guy lines without blocking a path.
Practise pitching in dry weather
Put the tent up at home before leaving. Find the instructions, sort the poles and check how the inner and outer tent fit together. The sequence depends on the model; follow your tent's instructions.
Pack in order. Protect the bedding. Keep the tent, pegs and waterproof clothing accessible without putting the rest of your luggage on the ground.
For an imagined 5 pm arrival, I would leave 30 minutes free of other commitments. That is a planning allowance, not a promised pitching time. With two people, one can read the instructions and pass parts while the other assembles them.
Make a dry place to change
Bring the sleeping bag in only once the tent is pitched and the floor checked. Keep dry sleeping clothes in a separate waterproof bag. Place wet shoes and jackets where they cannot soak the bedding or obstruct the exit.
Imagine the rain continuing after dinner at Siljan. I would use the campsite's available shared facilities rather than keep moving wet clothes around a sleeping bag. Check opening hours and what is included before booking; check which facilities are open for autumn camping.
Decide when to change the overnight plan
If water gets in and you cannot keep bedding dry, change pitch or accommodation. Follow current weather warnings and respect the limits of your equipment. Do not move a barbecue into the tent: Sweden's MSB warns about fire and poisonous carbon monoxide from glowing fuel.
Water on the inside of the fabric may also be condensation. The guide to moisture and drying between tent nights covers that separate problem once the camp is set up.
Keep the place you want to revisit
After two nights, a short evening walk by Siljan might be what you most want to remember. FARON lets you save the night on your map with a photograph and a note. Start by logging your first night while the place name is still fresh.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I pitch when rain is expected?
Choose level, dry ground without hollows where water can collect, within the area where camping is permitted.
Should the inner or outer tent go up first?
Follow your model's instructions; tent designs have different pitching sequences.
Can I barbecue in the tent doorway?
Keep the barbecue outside and a safe distance from the tent. An open door does not make it a safe cooking space.
When should I change accommodation?
Change when your equipment or the conditions prevent you from maintaining a safe, dry sleeping space.
