Wild camping on Gotland: separate parking, camping and protected land

A campervan in a marked gravel car park on the Gotland coast

Gotland has roughly 800 kilometres of coast. Coastline is not the same as a lawful overnight place, particularly for a motorhome, campervan or rooftop-tent car.

Expect the map to omit the deciding rule

A gravel road may appear to end on open coastal ground. On arrival, the final section can be private road, protected nature, a bathing place with a camping ban or land used for grazing.

Make the decision on site with enough daylight to leave. A rooftop tent does not solve the underlying question because the car must still stand lawfully.

    Separate parking from camping

Region Gotland distinguishes ordinary parking from camping. Its local public-order rules restrict camping on public places unless the site is allocated or arranged for it.

Sleeping inside a correctly parked vehicle is not automatically camping, but the exact parking rules still apply. Read Region Gotland's current motorhome and parking information.

Chairs, tables, awnings, levelling equipment and a spread-out setup use more than the parking space and make the activity look and function like camping. A P sign is not a blanket promise of a free campsite.

Keep the vehicle out of off-road terrain

The Right of Public Access does not allow a motor vehicle to drive or park in nature. Forest, beach, meadow, park and lawn can all count as off-road terrain under Swedish law. See the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's guidance.

No prohibition sign is required for the off-road-driving rules to apply. Wheel marks towards a beach are not necessarily a road; mown grass beside a bathing place is not necessarily parking.

Near a home, ask permission. Owners of private roads can also regulate vehicle traffic and parking. Read our wider Swedish wild-camping rules.

Check reserves, shores and access bans

Protected areas have individual regulations. Camping may be prohibited, confined to a designated place or otherwise limited. Use the County Administrative Board's current reserve pages for the exact area.

Bird and seal protection can prohibit access during all or part of the year. The walk from a car park to the shore can therefore be restricted even when parking itself is allowed.

Read the entrance board and identify the area. Current signs and area-specific regulations take precedence over a previous visitor's app comment.

Leave larger margins in peak season

In July, bathing places, boat ramps and small parking areas can fill long before evening. A designated stopover may also be full, and the next lawful option may sit behind you.

Keep a campsite or motorhome stopover as a backup before the ferry arrives. On ordinary public-road parking, general time limits can apply, but an additional sign can shorten or extend them. Always read the place.

Solve water, toilet and disposal before evening

A free parking night normally provides no service. Fill fresh water, retain sufficient toilet capacity and identify an authorised point for toilet and grey-water disposal.

Never discharge grey water or toilet waste beside a road or car park. Carry rubbish until a suitable container has capacity.

Facilities, access and hours change, so check Region Gotland's current information before the tanks become urgent. Check fire restrictions on the same day as any intended outdoor cooking.

Choose a designated place when uncertainty is high

A campsite or stopover is often the simplest choice after a late ferry, in strong wind, among full car parks or where signs are unclear. One serviced night can create capacity for several simpler nights later.

Save why you stayed or moved on

The deciding detail may be a two-hour limit, wind against the tent opening, a full stopover or a toilet requiring disposal.

    FAQ

Can I wild camp with a motorhome on Gotland?

A single night may be possible where the vehicle is lawfully parked and camping or overnight use is not prohibited. You must check all current local and protected-area rules.

Can I sleep in a car in a Gotland car park?

Region Gotland says sleeping in a correctly parked vehicle can be permitted when that place's parking rules are followed; spreading camping equipment changes the situation.

Does the Right of Public Access cover a rooftop-tent car?

No. It does not create a right to drive or park the car off road, and the rooftop tent does not change the vehicle rules.

Where should I check before stopping?

Read on-site signs, Region Gotland's current information and the County Administrative Board's rules for any reserve or protected-access area.
