Wash and dry a down jacket before your next trip

Illustration: Rust-coloured down jacket on a drying rack beside the dryer

A splash of coffee on one cuff after a break by Lake Siljan needn't send the whole down jacket through the wash. If the rest is clean, use the care instructions to treat the mark and let the cuff dry before deciding whether it needs another wash.

Leave time to dry the filling

Read the washing and drying symbols together. If you're leaving early tomorrow and need the jacket at the first stop, I'd leave the full wash until you get back. The shell can feel dry while the down is still damp in the thicker baffles.

Use the instructions sewn into the jacket

Empty the pockets. Check the label. Choose a permitted programme and follow the dosage on the down detergent. Joutsen's care advice is for its own down garments. Use your jacket's instructions if the temperature or drying method differs.

Check the hood and shoulders by hand

If the label allows a low tumble setting, pause from time to time to loosen the filling gently. If air drying is permitted, give the jacket space and tease the down apart as it dries. Feel inside the thicker baffles. A dense clump at the shoulder needs longer even when the cuffs are dry.

Pack the jacket when the filling is dry throughout and has regained its loft. A waterproof shell needs its own wash routine. If both jackets are coming on the hike, pack the down layer where you can reach it with your flask at the first break.

A flask by Lake Siljan and a picture from the break can be enough to remember which shore you stopped on. If you stay there overnight, add the photo and a few words about the spot to the night in FARON. Log your first night.

    Questions about washing down jackets

Can I air dry my jacket?

Yes, if the manufacturer's instructions allow it. Loosen the filling as it dries and allow plenty of time.

Does it need washing after every trip?

No. Air it and check whether a small dirty patch is all that needs cleaning.

    What temperature should I use?

Choose a temperature permitted on this jacket's label. Another down jacket may have different instructions.

Why does the down feel flat?

Damp down can collect in clumps. Feel through the baffles and finish drying as directed before packing.
