A crack as the pole bends, then one side of the tent drops. Take the load off before inspecting the break. A repair sleeve can hold a damaged aluminium section together temporarily. If the tent won't stand securely, find another place to sleep.
Find the break before fitting the sleeve
Lay the pole out so you can see which section is damaged. A sleeve over the middle of a tube leaves the next joint free. If the break is where two sections meet, the sleeve needs to bridge both of them. That leaves a longer piece to carry back to the car.
Centre the sleeve over the damage
Line up the ends. Slide the sleeve into place. Leave roughly the same length of sleeve on either side of the break so both ends have support. Tape each end of the sleeve to the pole with strong tape to keep it from shifting as the pole flexes. REI's illustrated pole repair guide shows the position.
A suitable sleeve slips over the tube with little play. Stop if you have to force it or a sharp edge still presses against the flysheet. Follow the tent maker's instructions for your particular pole.
Pack a joint that can no longer fold
A splinted joint may be too long for the pole bag. Keep it together and carry it lengthways where it won't be crushed. Take a picture of the damage before dismantling the pole at home. Give the maker the tent model, the position of the section, its length and its diameter to help identify the spare.
Pitch the tent once the replacement is fitted. If several pole sets share a shelf at home, label the bag with the tent model. Our guide to choosing a camping tent covers what to try on the first pitch.
If the broken pole means moving camp, the new spot is where you spend the night. Save that night in FARON with a photo and the lake name to find it again. Log your first night.
Questions about broken tent poles
Is a sleeve a permanent repair?
No. Replace the damaged section or have the pole repaired after the trip.
Can I fold the pole at the sleeve?
Only if the joint is free. Carry any sections joined by the sleeve at their full length.
Does one sleeve fit every tent?
No. Try the sleeve on your pole at home and check the manufacturer's instructions.
What if the tent still leans?
Find other shelter if the pole won't support the tent securely. Check the temporary repair before settling in for the night.
