Grit finds its way into a low shoe just below the ankle. In November snow at Fulufjället, it's the gap between trouser leg and boot cuff that fills up. A low gaiter can cover the first opening. For snow that reaches your calves, you need more height.
Match the height to the trail
On a dry gravel path, covering the shoe opening is often enough. Wet brush and deeper snow call for more coverage over the trousers. More fabric around the calf also feels warmer as you walk. Try the gaiters with the footwear you use most. A short gaiter made for a running shoe may be too narrow for a sturdy boot.
Fit the strap where the sole narrows
Lace your shoe. Close the gaiter. If there's a front hook, clip it to the laces to hold the front edge over the shoe. Guide the instep strap under the narrow part of the sole and keep an external buckle on the outside so it won't catch the other foot. REI's gaiter guide shows how straps and closures vary between designs.
Walk uphill to check the fit
Take a few steps up a slope. Flex your ankle and lengthen your stride. The front edge should stay put without pulling the laces tight across your foot. If the strap slips towards the heel, adjust it and try again. A gaiter that fits only while you're standing still may be the wrong shape or size.
Try a few steps near the car with the other shoe uncovered to feel the difference. If water is coming through the shoe itself, covering the cuff won't solve that. Our guide to hiking shoes and boots looks at footwear for different trail surfaces.
Snow can linger at the edge of the woods after the car park is clear. A trail photo and a note on the overnight stop in FARON help you remember where the gaiters came in handy. Log your first night.
Questions about hiking gaiters
Do I need tall gaiters for gravel?
A low gaiter is often enough to keep small stones out of the shoe opening.
Can I wear gaiters with low shoes?
Yes, if the lower edge and fastening fit. Try them on with the shoes you'll wear on the hike.
Will my shoes become waterproof?
No. Gaiters cover the opening and part of the trouser leg. Water can still pass through the shoe itself.
Where should the buckle sit?
An external instep-strap buckle usually goes on the outside. Follow the instructions for your model.
